So, yeah. It’s been a while, huh? I know: nothing is more boring than a blogger going, “OMG SO SORRY I HAVEN’T BLOGGED!” but, you know, here I am saying it.
Truth is, after the med fuck up last week, I had a massive amount of work to catch up on and then I had yet another conference to attend (this one local, thank GOD, so I was home at night) where I gave three presentations in a row, and then I had to come back and spend the day with Tori on Monday (she was off of school) and then and then and then…
Yeah. Basically, I spend a massive amount of time at my desk (with the cat helping, obviously) and not enough getting to write for me. It sucks, frankly, and at the event I did Saturday night my favorite, awesome writer friend Rachel Simon said to me, “You have to make the time. You have a book in you that needs to be written.” And all I can hear in my head is how can I write a book when I can’t even blog?
Sigh.
Anyway.
So how about those debates? Anyone else feel exhausted after they were over? I was mostly bummed because I really felt like Obama just wasn’t very, well, Obama-y. He’s an amazing debater, and it felt phoned in. Mitt was sharp and on point (even though he really played fast and loose with the truth, wowza – see where he lied on Factcheck.org’s tweet stream, and where Obama bent the truth a bit himself although not nearly so consistently).
I’m hoping the next one is better. And I still can’t shake the fucking political lethargy I have either. How about you? Did you watch? What did you think?

I didn’t watch. I had a bad feeling about it, and honestly I’m tired of this election season. I knew I’d be bombarded with clips and analysis today, so I decided to do this one second hand.
Cecily,
I didn’t watch. I’m sick of all this election crap, too. Blerg.
Also? I want to write a book as well, but have the same issue—-can’t even keep up w/ regular blog posts, so how on earth do I write a book. Mom says, “make the time.” i say, “omg, WHEN?”
I’m always happy when you blog :)
Thank you so much for the link to the Factcheck.org! Wish I had it last night!
I’m just glad you’re feeling better, and that you sound like your self again!
Women in particular should not be lethargic during this election cycle as we have the most ground to lose should their be a Romney presidency. Supreme court appointments alone could send us back to the 1800′s.
I watched it. My 12 year old’s history class is focused on this election so she watched it too. My husband, the political talk show addict, watched it along with us. I hated every single minute of it and had nightmares all night long about WTF Obama was doing on that stage. Was there a pending terrorist attack that was distracting him? Did he get a cancer diagnosis yesterday? Anything less than either of those things is no excuse for the piss poor performance in that debate. So many missed opportunities.
I realize that his approach was probably intentional and part of the long game his team is playing. I think it was a mistake for Obama to be so passive. Even if the pundits spend the next five days rehashing all the lies and exaggerations told by Romney, the incredibly bad TV I watched last night will leave a sour taste for a loooong time. I’m not going to change my vote, but for anyone on the fence who watched last night? Today they’ve decided to vote for Romney. I hope the next three weeks can undo that damage.
If the Romney campaign keeps pointing out the higher cost of gas and food, the high unemployment rate and other failures of this administration – I doubt there is much the Obama campaign can do in three weeks to undo that type of damage.
Well, playing Monday morning quarterback . . . I would have liked to hear about how the price of gas is not a measure of any President. How a recalcitrant Congress is resposible for the failure of many of the President’s efforts to resolve our financial crisis. How the President has made it possible for young adults to get medical coverage. How the cost of health insurance is a competitive issue in a global business climate, and how Obamacare helps get American businesses lower overall healthcare costs, thus making us more competitive with business in China, Europe, etc.
i would love to have a conversation with romney about how even though he believes we’re all under “one god,” the GOP is trying to trample on my religious beliefs in regard to my healthcare. that a rabbi opened for the GOP convention, i don’t even have words
I agree. As a Jewish American I don’t agree with those of my fellow religionists who endorse hawkish positions on settlements and other Israeli political issues. That’s probably the political position of this Rabbi who opened the convention.
I recently read a piece from Lilith (from last year I think?) about abortion in Israel. There are American Christian organizations doing “outreach” in religious Jewish communities to promote their anti-abortion agenda [shudder.] Do you think that Republican Rabbi has given much thought to the women’s healthcare platform of the Republican Party? I doubt it.
The terrorist attack in Benghazi didn’t distract him from doing a bang-up campaign run in Las Vegas.
I watched all 90 minutes with my 14-year-old son. That Jim Lehrer did a good job being neutral but he had a hard time controlling either of the candidates and they both took great liberties with the time.
Romney dominated the debate – and that was to be expected. The hardest hitting Obama has had to do of late is with the ladies on The View! It must be extremely difficult to come out of his cocoon where he has been insulated and protected by the media, to face some real opposition – and that’s what happened last night.
But what I am REALLY looking forward to is Biden v. Ryan! I might even fix popcorn for that one!
Your cat at least looks helpful. Our younger cat wants to play and she has been licking my feet a lot lately, which is just weird.
I started following Annie Lamott on Tweeter (did you end up being her guide?) and she speaks to writers daily it seems. She’s even inspiring me. Print out her tweets and stick them around to be your affirmations. you don’t have one book in you, you have 20, including several with Charlie (not news, i’ve been saying this on here for years.)
Obama on Letterman made Al Gore look exciting. I was sad at the wasted opportunity. Maybe he needs a few meds, i would after 3 years in that job with that Congress. On the bright side, my 75 year old night-club owning, Notre Dame worshipping, conservative successful southern uncle was so disgusted by Mitt’s response to Akin/rape debacle that he’s voting for Obama.
Your cat is so cute!!
The debates were a bummer and then some. Obama didn’t seem to want to be there, and nice Jim Lehrer hurt the debate flow.
It’s so absolutely totally worth it for the cat picture :)
I recorded the debate, which was broadcast at 11am on Thursday in Australia. Obama, without his loyal teleprompter, looked completely out of his depth and the media’s inability to run interference on his behalf for 90 minutes finally exposed Obama for what he really is (and always has been )- an economic and political lightweight, promoted far beyond his capabilities. I’m looking forward to the vice presidential debate this week and feel fairly confident that Ryan will similarly outperform Biden.
I totally know the feeling! Too manythings to do, not enough hours in the day!
I didn’t watch the debate although I followed along on Twitter.
Is it November yet?

Love your kitty pic! He looks so content there. ;o)
And I hate to say it because I don’t want to hurt your feelings, Cecily, because I love your blog … but I also loved the debate. It was like catnip to me to see someone take on President Obama like that. As for the president himself, I’m afraid his real problem was not the change in altitude, but his much-discussed dependency on his teleprompter. Obama sounds terrific when he has the words in front of him, but if he has to think of the words first, he stutters just like the rest of us. Romney was also absolutely at the top of his game, after spending months debating all the other Republicans. It was almost not a fair contest.
As for content … one could say that Romney played a bit fast and loose with the truth, but I can point to soooo many instances where Obama and his administration have done the same, that I don’t feel a bit guilty about it. (Shall we look at Benghazi? Shall we discuss the administration stonewalling for almost TWO WEEKS with that crap about the pre-planned 9-11 attack on the consulate being a spontaneous reaction to the stupid video? Shall we talk about the administration clinging to the fiction of the attackers “helping” Ambassador Stevens to the hospital, when in fact they raped him [or his dead body, that part is not clear] and paraded his corpse through the streets? It’s obvious to the most casual observer that Obama’s adminstration was trying to downplay this story to Americans so close to the election … and what is galling is that they seem to have succeeded! This is an intelligence failure of monumental proportions, involving the loss of huge amounts of classified data, and nobody gives a rat’s ass!!!!! … Sigh … except me, and a couple of commentators, I guess.) At any rate, there’s plenty of blame about lying to go around.
Sorry for the rant. I just really hate it when people piss on my head and tell me it’s raining. I don’t like it from anyone, on either side of the aisle.
