Television Dreams **Edited

by Cecily Kellogg on November 15, 2007

So last night I dreamed that Hiro (from Heroes) and Lt. Uhura (originally on Star Trek, but now woefully underused on Heroes) were starring in a musical episode of the superhero show. It was oddly touching. So I figured that’s as good a reason as any to talk about TV again. How are you all liking the fall season so far? I’m enjoying several new shows still (Pushing Daisies, Chuck), some old shows still (Ugly Betty, Gray’s Anatomy), and not liking some new shows as much (Private Practice–although each episode has one moment that makes it almost work, plus Taye Diggs–nuff said; and Journeyman). I’m sad that Californication’s season is over, but I loved the ending so completely that I almost wish they wouldn’t bring the show back and ruin it.

Now they are bringing in a bunch of new shows I don’t care about (October Road, ug) and where the fuck is Lost already? Plus the writer’s strike is making me seriously miss Jon Stewart in a big, big way.

Also, Chiara asked me to talk about Abby’s current storyline on ER. If you don’t watch, you need to know that her hot hot hot hubby had to go home to Croatia for some reason (like he’s filming a movie), so she felt the "pressure" of being a "single" mom; then her nanny let the baby fall off the playground equipment or something and he hit his head and bled a whole lot. So the night they came home from the hospital, she decided to blow her sobriety (she’s established as a recovering alcoholic on the show) and get trashed.

In short? There is NO way she would have gotten drunk the first night. In my limited medical experience, any time a child is injured–especially a head injury–they need to be checked throughout the night carefully. Abby is a DOCTOR so she would have been all over that shit. Two or three nights later? Sure.

However, I love that her sponsor said she couldn’t help her if she didn’t think she was an alcoholic. That was dead on.

So, there you go. Another boring NaBloPoMo entry. Now I must go because Tori is clinging to my leg and weeping inconsolably. Sigh.

**EDITED TO ADD**

I did not realize this, but somehow (something about the CSI/Without a Trace double episode) I missed ER last week and apparently didn’t DVR the episode. So I missed a LOT about Abby’s storyline.

Oh Abby. Abby, Abby, Abby.

We–and by we, I mean married alcoholic women–are just one drink away from what she’s doing. All the time. While her sleeping with the new boss was shocking, it doesn’t really surprise me. It’s just what I’d do (calm down, Charlie) if I started drinking again. Tonight’s episode, ending with her sobbing as she cleans up the spilled vodka on the carpet of her son’s room. Shit, shit, shit.

In some ways, that was better than a meeting. It never hurts to have a reminder about what is out there for me if I drink again–heartache, misery, and pain. Nothing else.

I don’t have a TV….BUT I got hooked on Gray’s Anatomy when my son borrowed the first year on DVD, so now I watch it on abc.com. I’m liking this season more than I thought I would after last year’s finale.
I haven’t watched Private Practice yet b/c the pilot sucked so badly, but maybe I’ll check it out. I really feel like vegging tonight, so it would be a good time to do it!
ER has been on FOREVER–I used to love it when I had a TV, but I haven’t had a TV in 10 years!

Jon Stewart, Stephen Colbert – my life is so empty w/o them. No joy in Whoville until they come back!
I just started to watch ER again after not watching much these last few years – love Abby! And John Stamos is better than I thought he would be. But Abby, I just don’t know…
On a related note …I forgot to post a question when you asked for topics for Nablopomohoho (whatever it is!) – and granted, you are many years away from this, but I was curious about how, as recovering alcoholics, you and Charlie plan to deal with Tori and the subject of drinking. I was first thinking that it would be harder (to teach about alcohol to a kid as someone in recovery), but I then I thought that in some ways it might be easier too – having lived the cautionary tale and all that. As the mom on the edge of that time frame, would be curious on your point of view.

I’m not loving this season of Heroes. Last season was terrific, but I’m just not feeling the plague threat as real. And I’m not sure I really care whether or not Noah Bennett gets shot.
So, pretty much the only thing I’m watching other than that is Amazing Race.

Just watched ER. Oh, the agony! Seems like people either love Abby or hate her, dunno why. I’m an Abby lover here, and what she’s going through is ripping me apart! I was holding back tears half the episode. I can’t take it!
It’s not real. It’s just a t.v. show. Just keep telling myself that and I’ll be fine… lol.
Seriously though- to your point, it is all too real sometimes.

I never watch hospital shows… I’ve spent too much time in hospitals; the shows make me queasy. :(
But I am SERIOUSLY hooked now on “Life.” Damian Lewis is very, very good in this (I know you think he looks weird but I think he’s kinda sexy!) and I love the fact that he is a TERRIBLE Buddhist, like myself. Also parts of it are quite funny — his trying to deal with cell phones and iPods and so forth after being locked in the pen for so many years. The Lewis character reminds me a lot of Lord Peter Wimsey — this very light character who actually has a galloping case of PTSD (Wimsey’s was from WW I) and is brilliant but so flawed … well, I should shut up about the show but I just love it. Which of course is the kiss of death since any show I love will get the axe sooner rather than later! (Such as “Arrested Development.”
Tagging onto someone else’s post, I am curious now too about what you will tell Tori about drinking when she gets older. Have you gotten that far yet?

Oooooh, I’m so looking forward to the new season of ER over here. That’s one bonus of getting everything later than you guys, the writers strike is unlikely to affect us, as we get everything at least 6 months late!

Thanks!
I wasn’t sure at first if they were being Message-y about it, and then last week was so painful with her waking up at dude’s place in a blackout and slowly remembering, and the humiliation of the airport scene…but then this week the agony/ecstacy of seeing Luka, which only gives her MORE reason to drink to put off facing herself over it. There was a time in my life where this social drinker was “very social” and I know morning shame and tonight’s episode was agonizing. Can’t wait to see where they go with it – Luka has to figure it out soon. So when she owns up to the drinking does she own up to the cheating?
P.S. love, love, love Pushing Daisies (such a hopeless romantic)

Aww, man…I’ve been too wiped this season to watch ER. I’m asleep by the time it comes on! Sucks…sounds like I’m missing a good dramatic storyline :-(

I think one of the best new shows this year is Life on NBC. Other than that, I just praise Gunn that Project Runway is back on.

Watching a few shows this season. Fewer than before, I think. Heroes, occasional CSI and Without a Trace. Somehow I got into NCIS, The Unit, and Criminal Minds. Love ansamble casts, I guess.
Miss Jon and Steven, big time. But my TiVo serves me steady doses of Keith from the night before while I make dinner or do dishes, so I am making do.

If you haven’t seen this, it’s as close as we’ll get to the Daily Show for a while, I’m afraid …

Being a mom has made me an emotional sap. I cry over Abby’s story every thursday night (it is a good thing my husband does not like the show so I can cry byself!) Luca needs to come home and then he does but Abby just needs to open up to people but she just can’t. It is so funny since it is just TV I want Abby to be a happy, in love, sober, mom and doctor again.

I haven’t watched ER in ages, although it sounds like the story lines have perked up some. I was soooo tired of all the huge disasters, and characters dropping dead and whatnot…it was too far from reality. I am a Project Runway addict, and I’m a big fan of Grey’s Anatomy.

Im still pissed they cancelled Daybreak. You wouldve liked it. It was Groundhog day meets Take Diggs.
